As Africa is the second largest continent in the world it comes as no surprise that the continent can cater for every one of your gap year needs. With an entire year to explore the continent you may as well go that extra mile and travel as much of it as you can with some of the most colourful cities on earth you will not be disappointed. The only problem you are set to face is that there are not enough days in a year and not enough memory on your camera to take it all in.

If you have the desire and enough time on your hands then why not take this opportunity to explore this wonderful continent maybe by volunteering in Zimbabwe. With the huge move forward in technology and infrastructure many countries in Africa are now a lot easier to get to without taking away their wild side. If you manage your time and route through Africa well using local transport then you will be able to do it at a fraction of the cost.

There is no better way to spend your gap year than to offer your services as a volunteer in Africa. The problems that the continent have had in the pass and continue to have are now a bit of a cliché. The stories of past humanitarian crises added to the current pandemics are what make your work here so important. In 2006 when the UN released its figures on the world’s most under developed countries 14 out of the 50 were in Africa. As a volunteer you are able to choose which line of work you want whether it is teaching, working with animals or working with children regardless of if you are volunteering in Nairobi.

It’s not just the people of Africa who face an uncertain future but also the wildlife of the continent. The WWF have designated 19 Zones in Africa that must be conserved to keep rare animals from becoming extinct. The wildlife in Africa maybe what is grabbing all of the headlines hear but it is the warmth of the people that affects the volunteers the most.
