Overview Of Alitalia Airlines
After the Second World War, the number of passenger airlines was increasing rapidly all around the world and even Italy was not far-off from this race. First commercial airline of Italy was established in September, 1946. It was recognized as Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali. It soon came to be commonly known as Alitalia Airlines. Alitalia Airlines is an amalgamation of two Italian words that is Ali and Italia, which means Wings and Italy correspondingly.
Alitalia Airlines started operation on the 5th of May 1947, and a Fiat G-12 Alcione was the aircraft that was used on its inaugural flight. In this year Alitalia Airlines carried about 10,000 passengers. By the end of the year 1949, the airline added four aircrafts that they had purchased from the Pan American fleet: Douglas DC-4s. The following year, 1950, saw the first Alitalia Airlines stewardesses assuming duty on board of these aircrafts. In October 1957, Alitalia Airlines merged with another airline Linee Aeree Italiane, forming Alitalia Airlines Linee Aeree Italiane.
Alitalia Airlines quickly became renowned as Italy’s national airline. In the year 1960, the Olympic Games was organized in Rome and Alitalia Airlines was became the official carrier for it. Alitalia Airlines took the first jets of its fleet: the DC-8 and the Caravelle in the same year. During the same year, they also achieved another very important landmark by transporting a million passengers. Alitalia Airlines achieved another landmark by owning only jet plans on their fleet by the year 1969, and it was the first airlines in Europe of that kind. This airline kept on growing despite all the challenges that it had to face over the following years.
Today Alitalia Airlines has 179 aircrafts to its name and is considered to be one of the most efficient airlines that Europe has on offer. The Alitalia Airlines airline fleet is also one of the youngest and most modern.
In May, 2005, the Alitalia Airlines Group launched its new website after re-organizing their business process. Along with online bookings, the airline also offers services such as web check in, self check in, and tele check in.
