Southern Europe – Where Should You Go?

Not everyone can agree on what exactly makes up Southern Europe. Is it as simple as choosing a particular line of latitude to set the boundary? Can one simply group together countries by languages spoken? The answer to both is probably not, but one thing is certain; the countries that could possibly stake a claim for Southern European designation are favorite stops on many a world traveler’s itinerary. Following are some of the most popular countries to visit in the south of Europe.

Dipping its boot into the waters of the Mediterranean Sea is the beautiful country of Italy. Renowned for its top-notch wineries and vineyards, the country also boasts the unique city of Venice, an aquatic curiosity whose streets are navigated by gondola. Inside Italy’s borders is found Vatican City, a country in its own right. It is home to the Pope, making it one of the most important religious regions in the world and a popular destination for curious sightseers.

Greece is another country in the south of Europe that finds its way onto the agenda of many tourists. It combines bright skies, sandy beaches, and rich history to establish a paradise for guests year round. In Greece, visitors sip exemplary wines, indulge in delicious meals, and perform sightseeing at historic locales such as the Parthenon. Its residency on the banks of the Mediterranean Sea, however, is possibly Greece’s most desirable aspect. Also found in the Balkans is Turkey, a country that boasts significant religious landmarks and ever increasing nightclub and fine arts scenes.

Also found in the Balkans is Montenegro. This country features warm, picturesque beachfront along the Mediterranean Sea as well as mountainous territory to the north. All types of interests from swimming, to hiking, to shopping are accommodated in Montenegro. Over on the Iberian Peninsula is Spain, not only one of the most popular countries to visit in Southern Europe, but one of the favorites in all of the world. Warm weather along the sea as well as the annual Running of the Bulls are just a couple of reasons that tourists flock there year in and year out.

The south of Europe provides lovely weather as well as historic locales that chronicle some of mankind’s most important events. All kinds of resorts and beaches are strewn across the region, and when combined with the various landmarks, create a favorite destination for travelers the world over.
